USC 49, Hawaii 10

Okay, we all know the final score of the University of Southern California Trojans' 2012 season opening game against the visiting University of Hawaii. It wasn't pretty if you were a Warriors fan.

But enough of that, if you were interested in the game itself, you've already watched the game live, or post-game coverage and highlights.

I just have some observations, 'cause that's the kind of guy I'm.

1. The first thing I noticed was the Ford promotion on the Fox College Sports pregame show. Their slogan is "Go Further" ... now, what that slogan is saying is, "Go promote something." The word further does not mean "farther." Fur from it ... er, I mean Far from it. Again, when you're talking about distance, the word to use is "farther" and not "further." Imagine that ... somebody got paid a lot of money to blow the language.

2. The first mistake Hawaii made was when they won the coin toss and elected to defer and kick off to the Trojans. The result? A 75-yard TD scoring pass from Matt Barkley to Marqise Lee on USC's first play of the game.

3. The second mistake Hawaii made was when they decided to take the ensuing kickoff out of the endzone instead of taking a knee. The result? They started play on the 10-yard line instead of the 25 (it used to be the 20, but the rule changed this year).

4. A continuing point of contention: USC going for 2-point conversions instead of kicking the point after touchdown. If you're going to try it (and I do understand the strategy), you gotta start making it. I grumble about this every year. This surely causes consternation amongst those who bet on USC. Because they didn't take the PAT kicks, they didn't make the spread.

5. Boy, is that Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder tough. He was taking a licking all day and kept on ticking. He got clobbered so many times, but kept coming back and making his passes. Guess he finally earned his spot as the Warriors' #1 QB, right?

6. And finally, the best news for Hawaii fans who put their money where their mouth was: The Hawaii defense prevented USC from reaching the 40-point betting spread.

And that's the way it was on the USC Trojans' opening day of football after years of probation and bowl bans. Fight on!
