Did you get any extra sleep last night? I did, and I feel great! Ahh, there's nothing like getting a little extra sleep, even if it's only one second.
And whether you realize it or not, you too were the beneficiary of that extra second. You see, a second before midnight last night was when the world's official timekeepers added one full second to the time.
The last time this happened was December 31, 2008. And yes, the digital clock graphic up there is correct. That's how the extra second was recorded. No neat transition from 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds to 24 hours. Nope. instead, it was 23 hours, 29 minutes and 60 seconds, and THEN 24 hours.
Just think ... if a rocket were being launched, the countdown would have gone something like this: Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, one, blast off! An Olympic runner would have to run a full second faster to even equal his/her time in a quest for a record. It's not fair, I tell ya, it's just NOT fair!
It just goes to show that no matter how we humans try to keep up with what's happening with the cosmos, sometimes we're just not accurate enough to be correct.
