Our New Roof

New Roof
Well, it was a couple of days of early morning to mid-afternoon hell for a few days this week, but it was all worth it.

The new roof has been installed. No more does the house have a marshmallow top. Instead, the roof is a lovely color-coordinated tan with variegated texture and color, which should be light enough to reflect away the hot Hawaiian sun during the upcoming summer months.

No more trucks blocking the driveway, no more outhouse in the front yard, and especially no more pounding, stomping and scraping above my head as I'm trying to get a few moments of extra sleep in the morning.

Awwwwrightie, then!

It looks great, Craig! You have a lovely house, huge and a huge yard too!

Awesome roof, Craig! Your new one complements the white walls, and is perfect for the tropical climate since it will be able to deflect the sun’s rays. That would help in lowering the temperature inside your house, as the structure absorbs less heat with the new roof. Did you feel the rooms get cooler after you got that?

A lighter-colored roof makes an amazing difference. We had dark brown shingle previously, then had it painted white as a temporary measure and the difference was notable. The paint, however, caused shrinkages and leaks, so we had the roof redone with the light-brown shingle. It's not hot summer here yet, but yes, the rooms are definitely cooler.

What a great way to start the month of April, Craig. :) There's a particular color that reflects heat pretty well, and that is white paint. I'm not sure about tan though - I need to research on that one. Nevertheless, it looks good on your house! BTW, is that a metal or wood roof?

The roof had been painted white, but the paint shrank and the roof leaked. The roof shingles are asphalt, Freddy.

Congratulations on your new roof, Craig! Nice choice of color. It does blend well with the exterior of your house. Also, the greenery surrounding it complements your roof’s new color, which conveys an earthy look. Kudos! What roofing material did you use?

Neutral colored roofs are good to use because they blend well with any wall color you choose. It gives a warm feeling without overpowering the rest of your house exterior. Moreover, if you are planning to resell your house, neutral colors are also beneficial, as these are more appealing to home buyers. Maintaining such a roof is also easier because dirt is less visible.

Your new roof looks great! That color choice is perfect for a sunny place like Hawaii. You’re correct – the color is going to reflect the heat away from the house, keeping it cooler inside. Enjoy the comforts of your new roof!

Thanks to all of you! Noreen, we used asphalt shingles. We're in the middle of summer and although it does get warm in the house, it's nothing like it was before. It's a lot cooler this year, and I think the solar-powered attic ventilators are paying off as well.

Haha, yeah, renovations can sometimes be pretty hard to deal with, but as they say, ‘no pain, no gain!’” The new roof looks great. It’s a very attractive color. It stands out from all the green of the foliage around the house.

Craig Miyamoto said...

Thanks, Norbert! We're very happy with the new roof.

I’m loving the new color of the roof as well, Craig! It’s a very unique shade to go with, especially in a sunny place like Hawaii. The tan looks great with the white color of the wall paint. I can only imagine what it must’ve looked like with the brown shingles, haha. But I can tell you’re so much happier with this tan roof.

I'm glad that you decided to paint it with White, Craig. It can be pretty hot in Hawaii, and a white roof could work out well. Speaking of which, my cousin and his husband just got married in Hawaii two months ago.

We're very happy with the lighter colors, Allyson and Will. It is the middle of summer and although it gets warm in the house, it's nowhere near the oppressive heat of the past.

Correct, Will Peartin. As a matter of fact, even the Obama administration is persuading homeowners to get white roofs to reduce the heat and to cut down electric bills.

Marshmallow top? Hmm. I wonder what your roof looks like before your new roof was installed. Haha! Anyway, congratulations on your newly installed roof, Craig! The color is perfect and it makes the atmosphere appear peaceful and relaxing. Nice!

Roof construction can be quite the hassle, and I totally agree. But at least it got done! I’m sorry to hear the paint caused a few more problems, though. I hope everything’s been resolved? And I hope your asphalt roof has been a great comfort during this summer heat. It’s been pretty brutal all over the country!

Craig Miyamoto said...

Everything's been resolved, Galliena. And it sure made this past summer a little cooler!

Good choice of roof, Craig. One big advantage of asphalt roof shingles is their cost. They can efficiently be manufactured in high volumes, hence, they are relatively inexpensive to produce. Moreover, compared to other roofs, the installation cost of asphalt roof shingles is also relatively inexpensive.

Ahhh...the most popular choice for roofing material. This is due to its numerous advantages which include maintenance, installation, look, and cost. What I like most about asphalt shingles is that they are lightweight, as most roof materials are heavy which could add a little burden when being installed. :P

That’s a nice looking roof you have there! Its natural colors really fit well with the surrounding! With that kind of roof, the heat of the sun wouldn’t be felt that much inside, especially if you’re living on a beautiful island near the equator and in the middle of the ocean.

Joanne Barragan said...

I certainly agree with Terry's comment about asphalt roofs. What interests me most about asphalt roof shingles is that they continue to look good even with little maintenance and that they can be easily repaired if damaged.

Craig Miyamoto said...

Thank you, Terry, Mariam, Raymonde and Joanne. The shingles are holding up just fine and the roof still looks brand new. Our hot summer felt much cooler than summers past.

How long did it take to finish Craig? I really like your house. The location is perfect! Love that smell of grass and plants in the morning. Doesn't it look so pretty caught in the middle of nature?

It didn't take very long, Willie -- less than a week once they got the materials on site. Thanks for the compliments on the house!
